Eupeodes corollae

Habitat: Gardens, parks and other open areas

Size: Wing length 5-8.25mm

Species account: One of the two common and widespread Eupeodes species (the other being E.luniger). Males and females differ significantly, with the females usual having thin comma shaped markings, whereas the male tends to have broader spots, often joined in the centre to form a spectacle like pattern. In both sexes the markings reach the lateral edge of the tergites, distinguishing them from otherwise similar congeners. The female also has well defined grey shining bands on the posterior margins of tergites 2, 3 and 4 and the black area on the frons extends at most a quarter of the distance between the ocelli and the antennae.
