Epistrophe
Another genus of 'typical' hoverflies with yellow markings on a black abdomen. The legs are mostly yellow in all species and the sides of the thorax above the wings are distinctly yellowish. Most species have two complete bands across tergites 3 and 4, the notable exception being the common Epistrophe eligans which usually has reduced markings.
Epistrophe diaphana - Scarce southern species. Broad bands on abdomen which narrow sharply at sides. Antennae black, grey stripes on thorax.
Epistrophe eligans - Female with more extensive markings than male, distinctive in both sexes.
Epistrophe grossulariae - Large species with broad parallel bars which do not narrow at edges of tergites. Black antennae, grey stripes on thorax
Epistrophe melanostoma - Scarce southern species with orange antennae and no black hairs on scutellum
Epistrophe nitidicollis - Widespread but somewhat local species. Orange antennae, no stripes on thorax. At least some black hairs on scutellum.
