Episyrphus balteatus

Habitat: Ubiquitous

Size: Wing length 6-10mm

Species account: Perhaps the commonest hoverfly in the UK, in midsummer it can reach near extremely high densities as the numbers are boosted by immigrants from the continent. The markings are variable but always comprise double black bands on tergites 3 and 4.
