Eristalis tenax

Habitat: Ubiquitous

Size: Wing length 10-13mm

Species account: The largest and most robust of the Eristalis species to be found in the UK, Eristalis tenax, also has the distinction of being one of the few species which may be seen in any month of the year. The all dark hind tibiae are unique in the genus, the dark front tarsi and broad black facial stripe are also useful field characteristics. Flies January to December across the UK.
