Xanthogramma pedissequum
Habitat: Grassland and woodland edges
Size: Wing length 7.5-9.5mm
Species account: The commoner of the two Xanthogramma species, found mainly in the south of the UK. The bright markings make this instantly distinguishable from other hoverflies, with the exception of its congener Xanthogramma citrofasciatum. The triangular markings on tergite 2 are noticeably stubbier on X.pedissequum, and the dark wing markings are more sharply defined.
