Volucella bombylans

Habitat: Open areas and woods

Size: Wing length 8-14mm

Species account: A bumblebee mimic, and thus very different from the other Volucella species. There are two main colour forms as shown below. Confusion with other bumblebee mimicking species is possible, but V.bombylans is the only species with plumose arista and an elongate face, other than Arctophila superbiens, which has a different colouration.
