Xylota segnis

Habitat: Woods and hedgerows

Size: Wing length 7-9.5mm

Species account: Xylota segnis is a familiar site in woodlands across the UK as it scuttles across the surface of vegetation or fallen wood. Confusion is only likely with the closely related Xylota tarda, a far scarcer species closely associated with grey poplar. Xylota segnis has the orange markings on the abdomen uninterrupted, and strong spurs on the hind femora. Males have a large spine on the hind trochanter, but this is difficult to see without obtaining a specimen.
