Family Communication

Communicating clearly with families is always an important aspect of education. That was never demonstrated to be more true than last year when the district and families were consistently adjusting and reacting to life. Each member of the WPS staff rose to the occasion and created open channels between the school and home to share what was happening in the class with families that weren't permitted to step foot in our buildings. Thank you for rising to the occasion and even stepping out of your comfort zones.

I think it is important to revisit parent communication now that our school resembles more of a normal flow to the year. Common Sense Media suggests three important tips for communicating with families:

1. Send info on a regular, predictable basis - such as weekly newsletters or updates

2. Find a platform that meets parents and students where they are - using an app, newsletter resource, or emails

3. Empower students to lead some of the communication - allow students to share their work, pictures, or a weekly recap in their own words

WPS does not require all teachers to use the same mode of communication. You may find that across your grade level or building there are a number of different resources used to facilitate communication with families. If you aren't satisfied with what you are currently using to communicate with families or explore what options might be available adding that as a Tech PD request through Vanessa's Tech PD Survey is a great start.
