Signing into Google Chrome and using Web Apps and Extensions (Part 1)

We learned from Shrek that ogres are like onions. His reasoning was sound, ogres have layers just like an onion, a raw crunchy onion. Since ogres are complex someone cannot simply get to the heart of an ogre without peeling the layers back slowly. Add in the additional facts that onions have a pungent aroma and often make you cry when you're near them and the analogy really takes off.

If an ogre is like an onion then Google is like a Bloomin' Onion from Outback. There is so much delicious goodness packed into those layers of crispy, battered onion and then there's a great dipping sauce with a kick at the center to finish it off. It is a tough task to digest the whole thing in one sitting or even by yourself over time. I use this analogy because it can be intimidating when faced with all of the great tools Google has to offer and aren't sure how to take it all in. We see some of our colleagues diving in and digesting more than we can handle ourselves. The important thing to remember is to not make yourself sick over any of this. Only take in what you know you can handle. While I'm more likely to dive in and digest all of it (both the Bloomin Onion and Google) you may only want to or be able to handle a few pieces at a time. That's great! Stay patient with your own learning and move on to other things as you see fit.

This post, other than making you hungry, will help you get logged into Google Chrome if you have not already done so. Logging-in makes some parts of the Google experience simpler and will also provide Just-In-Time training resources. Once logged in you have some additional options available for Chrome Extensions and Web Apps. We'll cover those next week.

  1. Open Chrome
  2. In the top right of the screen, click the button. It's possible it might already have your name or someone else's there.
  3. Click Sign in to Chrome. If your name is already there you won't need to go any further. If someone else's name appears click Switch Accounts.
  4. Sign in with your WPS Google Account.
  5. You will be asked if you'd like to "Link your Chrome data to this account". This means any record of websites, bookmarks, or saved account information that was available before signing into Chrome will be available after signing into Chrome. You will probably want to Click Link Data
  6. After clicking "Link Data", there will be a pop-up window and an additional tab that opens (Adblock Plus has been installed). You can close the Adblock Plus tab and Click "Ok Got It" on the pop-up window.
  7. Additional tabs will probably open at this point, which you can close out of. They are just updating different Extensions and Apps that are available, we'll cover that much, much later. You are now logged into Chrome.

Also, you now have access to an additional training resource, G Suite Training , which appears in the upper right corner when you are using Gmail, Google Calendar, or Google Drive. When clicking on the icon pictured a window will appear on the right of your screen with training videos, guidelines, and tips that relate to what you are currently working on. If typing an email you will receive information about Gmail. If you are working in Google Calendar you will receive information about Calendar. If you are working in Google Docs you will receive information on setting up and working in Google Docs. This can be an effective resource if you have a quick question specific to what you are working on in that moment.

Keep checking out Google and peeling off those layers bit by bit. Make sure you are taking time to digest each piece before moving on to the next!
