The Gnat is a two-seat advanced jet trainer and first flew in July 1955. Originally designed as a lightweight fighter, it was never used in that role by the Royal Air Force. The prototype trainer version first flew in 1959 and was retired from RAF service in 1979.
G-MOUR is based at North Weald and wears the colours of XR992 of the RAF Yellowjacks 'unofficial' aerobatic team. In 1965 the Yellowjacks reformed as the official RAF aerobatic team, the Red Arrows, who continued to use the Gnat until 1979, when they were replaced by the British Aerospace Hawk.
