THE LAND OF ARTISTRY
Sunagakure is the most impoverished village out of the five majors in the Elemental Continent. For most of the villages' existence, they have been occupied by foreign powers which exploit their resources and people. However, the village maintains some of highest levels of comradery between citizens and serves as a cultural epicentre. Some of the most renowned music, pottery, arts and calligraphy have been produced by the Hidden Sand.
Located in the Land of Wind, Sunagakure resides in arid sands. Vast stretches of nothing but yellow dust awaits those venturing around the village, spare few pockets of blissful oasis'. The village is very low on sustainable food and water, heavily relying on Konoha's aid.
The buildings are all constructed with sandstone, harvested from local quarries. Rivalling only Iwagakure, Sunagakure owns the most cubic metres of land - Land rich in oil reserves and minerals.
Konoha often abuses this, being the main importer of food and water for Sunagakure in return for their oil. Their trades are not favourable to Sunagakure as the Hidden Sand often get undercut in their trades.
Sunagakure has pretty bad quality of living for it's citizens. Lacking in food, resources and infrastructure, it is an impoverished country that can't sustain it's massive population.
Despite this, the streets of Suna are lively, bustling with music and festivities. The people maintain high morale in the face of oppression. Sunagakure has the least amount of clan discrimination out of the five major villages.
Only richer families / Shinobi clans will enjoy a decent standard of living. The average citizen has a low life expectancy. Only Kirigakure rivals Suna's death rates, but the former's usually isn't of natural causes.
Sunagakure's Ninja academy doesn't bolster a huge number of attendees despite the villages' staggering population. Entering the academy requires either exceptional skill or money, thus making it hard to be even considered to become a Shinobi.
The teachings and practices of the academy, once you get in, are very similar to Konohagakure's.
Smaller, unofficial and private Ninja academies are littered around the country, offering training programmes to young, poorer Nin. Many poorer families teach their children privately themselves or through these private, yet dodgy, academies to try and get their children into the academy through merit.
This is a tab for the history of Konoha your OC would be told. Some of it may be incorrect according to the servers' actual history.
WARRING STATES
The Land of Wind has had a history of kingdoms and empires attempting to create a centralised village. Many have risen and fell during the Warring States, battles raging across the sands just as they were in neighbouring countries. No matter how powerful or secure the rule, the empires would continue to fall.
However, with the inception of Konohagakure, things began to change. Kanoshita Kaze, a Shinobi not hailing from any clans, assumes control of Shukaku. From the Tailed Beast, he harnessed Sand Release as a Kekkei Genkai, continuing to pass it onto his descendants. The clan 'Kazesuna' was created from this.
Shukaku is one of the only Tailed Beasts that the given name is known of, found through ancient scriptures burried in the Land of Winds' grainy catacombs. He is believed to be a deity of the Land Mass, worshipped by all. Once captured and maintained, Sunagakure finally united under the rule of the Kazesuna.
OCCUPATION AND WAR
Prior to the first Great Ninja war, Kirigakure assumed control of Suna. A hostile invasion was launched by the Land of Mist, who had been using their neighbouring nation, the Land of Rivers, as basis for operations. Kirigakure was looking for an expansion of control and territory, occupying Suna from thereafter with an oppressive rule.
Once the war began between Kirigakure and Konoha, Sunagakure was ordered to assist Kirigakure. Suna complied and declared war on Konoha, the war raging on for several years and devastating Suna's already unstable economy.
At the very end of the war, Tailed Beasts were leveraged as weapons. The current holder of Shukaku, a descendant of Kanoshita, was ordered to nuke Konoha at the cost of his own life.
Konohagakure would intercept before the Jinchuriki's arrival, preventing major damage to the village, but the nuke would still set-off. Shukaku advanced to the Hidden Leaf but was murdered by a strike team; Konoha's sealing capabilities, at the time, were not potent enough to contain a tailed beast. They had been too reliant on the now deceased Uzumaki.
Shukaku has disappeared since then, the Kazesuna losing power.
MODERN DAY
With the war ending, Sunagakure was liberated from Kirigakure as part of a peace treaty. While many thought that to be positive, Konohagakure proceeded to assume control of Sunagakure in Kiri's place. Konoha continues to maintain Suna, exploiting it with more diplomatic and covert means as opposed to Kiri's blunt, iron fist methods.
Many of Sunagakure's population are blind to their mistreatment by Konoha, some believing it is better by comparison to Kiri's time. The Hidden Leaf still leverages the peace treaty against Suna should they object, arguing that it is the fault of Suna for engaging in the war and attempting to nuke their village.
Many of the OCs roleplayed in the server have been born into this occupation, Suna occupied by one foreign power or another for the past 35 years.
