The Horiren clan started as a monastic tribe displaced during the first ninja war. They found refuge in Kumo and established themselves within the village hierarchy. Through their focus on painting and tattooing practices, they were seen as a great addition to the village's military force and to the artistic culture of Kumo. Their artwork can be found throughout the village as large murals on important buildings and chakra-infused tattoos on major officials.

The clan has a matriarchal structure and has only ever had female clan heads through the years. They believe that honoring the mothering spirit of their matriarch allows them to focus on creative prosperity. Female officials from the clan can be identified by their distinct neck tattoos that symbolize power, admiration, and resilience. 

Their tattooing is a spiritual practice meant to honor their ancestors and embolden future generations, and the use of these tattoos is fundamental to the clan's strength and fighting style. Once a member of the clan receives their initial tattoos, typical starting at the hands or feet as major chakra network centers, they are trained to harness their ink in combat and given pain-staking artistic training to then pass on the practice, training and tattooing a student of their own as soon as they reach the rank of Chunin. 

Horiren can use ink jutsu without scrolls, harnessing the chakra-infused ink of their tattoos and have strengthened their body beyond natural human limits to withstand the constant pressure these tattoos place on the body. The stronger the individual, the more detailed and encompassing the artwork that covers their body. An individual with tattoos that cover the scalp is seen to be enlightened, reaching the rank of monk within the clan.
