★　聖公会　婦人宣教師　ファニー・ルイス・トンプソンについて

聖公会　宣教師ファニー・ルイス・トンプソン婦人は1912年（明治45年）にイギリスから来日し、鹿児島、熊本、延岡、門司、八幡、種子島で宣教活動を実施した。

1940年（昭和15年）1月18日に逝去された。長崎に墓地があるらしい。

30歳で来日したとすれば58歳位で亡くなったと思われる。

記録はあまり残ってはいないが1988年5月に発行された「大口聖公会70周年記念誌」に一部記録があるため下記紹介する。

聖公会の伝道によって大口の町にキリスト教が伝えられたころは、国鉄山野線はなく、伊佐盆地を横切って走る列車はありませんでした。

　そのころ鹿児島市に定住しておられたミス・トンプソンという婦人宣教師が、大口の山野部落に住んでいる人に伝道するために、月に一度か二か月に一度、鹿児島からはるばるこの人の家を訪問していました。国鉄鹿児島駅から肥薩線栗野駅まで汽車で来ます。そこから鉄道はなく、小さな客馬車が走っていました。トンプソン先生は、その馬車に揺られながら山野へ行かれました。途中、大口の町の馬車宿で人も馬もしばらく休憩しました。

そのとき先生は、この田舎町を見ながら馬車の中で一生懸命お祈りをなさいました。

「神さま、この大口の町の人たちが救われるために、キリスト教がこの地に伝えられるようにしてください」

　ここを通るたびにされたこのお祈りが何年かのちにかなえられました。

Anglican missionary Miss Fanny Lewis Thompson came to Japan from England in 1912 (Meiji 45) and conducted missionary activities in Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Nobeoka, Moji, Yahata, and Tanegashima. She passed away on January 18, 1940 (Showa 15). She seems to have her graveyard in Nagasaki. If she came to Japan at the age of 30, she would have died at the age of 58. There are few records left, but some records are in the "70th Anniversary of the Ookuchi anglican-Episcopal Church" published in May 1988, so introduce them below.

When Christianity was introduced to the town of Okuchi by Anglican evangelism, there was no JNR Yamano Line and no trains running across the Isa Basin. Miss Thompson, a female missionary who settled in Kagoshima City at that time, traveled all the way from Kagoshima once a month or once every two months to preach to a person living in the Yamano village to visit the house. Take the train from Kagoshima Station on the Japanese National Railways to Kurino Station on the Hisatsu Line. There was no railroad from there, and a small carriage was running. Lady Thompson went to Yamano, swaying in her carriage. On the way, both people and horses took a break for a while at the carriage inn in the town of Ookuchi. At that time, she prayed hard in her carriage while looking at this country town. "God, let Christianity be passed down here so that the people of this town can be saved." This prayer made every time I passed here was fulfilled several years later.
