William Pearce

Born in 1875, National Hunt jockey William Pearce rode 55 winners during a career that spanned the end of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries.

He started out as an amateur and achieved his first success under NH rules on Lethe, winner by a neck of the Nil Desperandum Selling Hurdle at Llangibby and Tredegar on November 25, 1896.

After turning professional, he enjoyed his best year in 1904 with a tally of 16 wins. They included three on a horse named Erik, namely the Robin Hood Handicap Chase at Nottingham in March, the Easter Handicap Chase at Manchester in April, and the Swynnerton Handicap Hurdle at Keele Park in May.

His best single day’s racing came at Woore on April 5, 1906, when he notched a treble, winning the Dorrington Hurdle on Topthorne, the Trentham Selling Chase on Coal Tax, and the Open Hunt Chase on Coroner.

He gained the last of his 55 wins in the stewards’ room at Wenlock on May 6, 1910. Having finished second, beaten 40 lengths, on Mero in the Abbey Hunters’ Chase, he was awarded the race when the winner was disqualified on technical grounds.

William rode for the final time when finishing fourth on Worm Pecker in the Novices’ Chase at Leicester on January 25, 1911.
