Alan Proud

1958 - 2019

Lightweight jockey Alan Proud was born on January 7, 1958. He served his apprenticeship with John Oxley, Mick Easterby and Jack Hardy. He rode his first winner on the Easterby-trained Gold Cheb at Thirsk on May 15, 1976.

In 1985 Alan won three races on Richard Holder’s seven-year-old stayer Ballet Champ including the Syd Mercer Memorial Trophy at Warwick and Ascot’s Brown Jack Stakes, carrying just 7st 7lb on both occasions.

However, he rated the highlight of his career as his association with David Chapman’s Glencroft in 1988, the year in which the multiple winning sprinter won nine handicaps. Alan was on board for three of those wins. (Stewart Webster rode him on the other six occasions) and he also finished second on Glencroft in that year’s Stewards Cup.

Alan enjoyed another notable success in 1984 on Mary Maguire in Ayr's Tote Sprint Trophy. His other major victories included the Golden Jubilee Challenge Handicap and the Coral Bookmakers Handicap. He rode a total of 82 winners in Britain between 1976 and 1992 and also rode in India, Germany and Abu Dhabi.

He died in January 2019, aged 61.
