Christopher Price

Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Keith Price served in the Royal Artillery. A well above average soldier rider, he took part in Sandown Park’s Grand Military Gold Cup no less than 15 times, winning it twice on Double Bridal in 1977 and Ballyross in 1982.

He was just plain Mr C. K. Price when riding in the race for the first time in 1968, finishing seventh on Givus Light. He’d been promoted to the rank of Captain when riding his first winner under National Hunt rules on 13-8 favourite Bob’s Birthday in the Grand Military Hunters’ Chase at Sandown on March 9, 1974. He’d finished second on Johnnie Belinda in the Grand Military Gold Cup the previous day.

On Friday, March 4, 1977, Christopher won a division of the Burford Novices’ Chase on Major General Sir Jack d’Avigdor-Goldsmith’s Double Bridal, trained by Fulke Walwyn. Just seven days later he rode that same horse to victory in the Grand Military Gold Cup.

He finished second on Queen’s College in the 1979 Grand Military Gold Cup, 12 lengths behind Captain James Hodges on former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Ten Up.

He’d been promoted to Major by the time he finished fourth on Double Bridal in 1980. He came fourth again on Beacon Time in 1981, then won it for a second time on Ballyross in 1982 – that year’s race being run at Kempton due to rebuilding works at Sandown – beating De Pluvinel by two and a half lengths.

Promoted further to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1983, he rode in six more Grand Military Gold Cups, finishing third on Late Night Extra in 1986 but ended up on the deck on his last two attempts, being unseated from Wyford in 1987 and falling with Bundle Boy in 1988.

Although he served in the Royal Artillery, he only rode in the Royal Artillery Gold Cup on two occasions, both times failing to complete the course.
