Andrew James Price rode four winners over jumps in the second half of the 1980s. He had a few rides as an amateur without success before turning professional in the autumn of 1985.
He was a conditional jockey with William Price (presumably related) and it was on his Mendaleak that he had his first ride in the paid ranks. The nine-year-old led at the third last flight but faded to finish fifth in the Ernest Robinson Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on January 2, 1986.
It was at Newton Abbot that Andrew had his first success when Rusty Roc led all the way and coasted home the easy winner of the Mousehole Selling Handicap Hurdle by 12 lengths. The winner was bred, owned and trained by Melvyn Davies, who was based at Abergavenny, but it was William Price who provided Andrew’s second winner when the six-year-old Merry Tom led from halfway and had seven lengths to spare at the end of the Bishops Frome Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at Hereford on December 2. Then at Wincanton on Boxing Day Rusty Roc obliged again, this time by 15 lengths in the Stirrup Cup Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.
Andrew managed two third places from seven subsequent starts on Merry Tom but never rode Rusty Roc again. In fact, he had to wait more than two years for his last success, which came on the eight-year-old Medes, trained by William Price. Having taken the lead at the tenth flight, the pair ran on well to beat Space Kate by a length in the Racecall Course Long Distance Handicap Hurdle at Hereford on May 6, 1989. Andrew was riding Medes for the first time that season. After they finished last next time out, Bruce Dowling took over in the saddle and Andrew had few opportunities thereafter.
