Barry David Payne was apprenticed to Lambourn trainer Bob Read and rode his first winner on Ashby Star in the Corporation Maiden Apprentice Plate at Worcester on July 22, 1961, beating Tartan Muse, the mount of Barry Beard, by a neck. Ashby Star was trained by Roland Mansfield at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, and was owned by his wife.
Barry had a total of 19 rides that year but managed just the one winner and one third place. He took out a National Hunt jockey’s licence for the 1962/63 season and had his first ride at Wincanton on October 4, when unplaced on Rosangle, trained by Bob Read, in the Chestnut Handicap Hurdle.
Rosangle also provided him with his sole success over jumps when making all to land the Sedgemoor Selling Handicap Hurdle back at Wincanton on November 15, 1962, beating Crack o’ Dawn, the mount of the useful amateur rider George Hartigan, by six lengths.
Barry did not keep the ride and had few other opportunities – he had only five rides that season – with his final mount coming on Zondore, unplaced in the Farnham Handicap Hurdle (Division 2) at Wincanton on March 12, 1964.
