Henry Chudleigh Percy – always known as Chudleigh and rode as ‘C. Percy’ – was the youngest son of trainer Henry Percy.

He rode at 5st 8lb and was known as ‘The Prince of the Lightweights’. On Wednesday, July 29 1840, he won the Goodwood Stakes on Orelia. He also won the Ascot Stakes in 1840 on Darkness.

After riding Scarf at a Newmarket autumn meeting on Tuesday, October 25, 1841, he was taken ill and given a ‘reviving draft’. He recovered sufficiently to later take the mount on The Young ’Un in the Cambridgeshire.

It was to be his last ride.

When taken home his condition gradually got worse. He died at Pimperne on November 29, 1841, in his nineteenth year.
