Josiah Frank Prout was born in Flemington, Australia, on May 11, 1898. Weighing just 5 stone, he began riding in Victoria in 1912. He had ridden 16 winners when moving to Britain to ride for the Stanley House stable.

He achieved a fair measure of success and scored his two most important victories in 1914, winning Kempton Park’s Great Jubilee Handicap on The Curragh and the Liverpool Autumn Cup on Diadumenos.

At Royal Ascot that same year he won the Queen Anne Stakes on Bridge of Orchy and the Queen's Vase on Glorvina.

He returned to Australia in 1917 and rode over jumps but after riding a few winners and suffering a few falls he decided to call it a day.

Josiah Prout died in Ballarat on September 16, 1983, aged 85.
