National Hunt jockey George Peak, often incorrectly shown in the form books as ‘Peake’, rode for over a decade at the start of the 20th century and had 17 wins, seven of them at Colwall Park.
Born in 1883, he had his first ride in 1901 but it was not until 1904 that he first entered the winner’s enclosure. That day came when Little Sam upset the 4/1 on favourite Nesta to score by three-quarters of a length in a match for the Novices’ Hurdle at Monmouth on October 27. Nesta, ridden by the experienced Tom Savage, had not run since March, whereas Little Sam had had a recent outing, albeit unplaced, with George aboard at Colwall Park the previous month.
Despite that success, it was not until April 23, 1906 that George won for a second time. Again it was in a match and again it was on Little Sam. Starting the 5/4 on favourite, Little Sam finished a length and a half ahead of Red Spinner, ridden by his owner Mr Norman Cuthbertson, to take the Barton Court Selling Chase at Colwall Park.
A further eleven months elapsed before George rode his third winner, at Monmouth on March 15, 1907, but that heralded his best year with five victories, including a double at Colwall Park in April on horses trained by Jonathan Riste.
Altogether he had three wins on the selling hurdler Bond Slave and on the chaser Lady Tibby, as well as a third success on Little Sam.
His penultimate victory was in yet another match when Flying Spur was successful in the Llangibby Selling Chase at Newport on June 5, 1911. They finished alone after their solitary opponent, the 2/1 on favourite Cynique, ridden by top jockey Arthur Smith, had refused.
The four-year-old Flying Spur went on to provide George with his last win when taking the Barton Court Selling Chase at Colwall Park on September 18, 1911, five years after George’s first victory in the race on Little Sam.
He had his final ride on December 28 of that year when Cottesmore ran out in the Malvern Three-Year-Old Hurdle at Cheltenham.
