Edward Payne

Edward ‘Speedy’ Payne enjoyed his biggest success when riding Mother of Pearl to victory in the 1866 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He also won races on a good horse called Cranberry.

The story goes that he once lost his temper with the stewards, saying that they used to tell him one day that he was trying too hard and another day that he wasn’t trying hard enough!

‘Speedy’ Payne died at 2.00 a.m. on the morning of June 18, 1896 in a lodging house in Masshouse Lane, Birmingham, aged 62.
