Tim Palmer

Major Timothy Clephan Palmer served with the Royal Artillery and twice won the “Gunners’ Gold Cup” on his horse Moonlight III.

He rode him in five renewals of the Royal Artillery Gold Cup, finishing second on their first attempt in 1951. After snow had caused the 1952 fixture to be abandoned, Major Palmer and Moonlight III won it for the first time in 1953, coming with a strong late run to collar Brigadier Ronnie Holman’s mount Kilcullaheen by half a length close home.

In 1954, Major Palmer rode Moonlight III to victory in Sandown’s Grand Military Hunters’ Chase and followed that with a second Royal Artillery Gold Cup triumph, drawing clear from the Pond fence to score by ten lengths.

He rode Moonlight III in the next two Royal Artillery Gold Cups, finishing fifth in 1955 and fourth in 1956.

Major Tim Palmer’s three wins under National Hunt rules were:

1. Moonlight III, Sandown Park, April 1, 1953

2. Moonlight III, Sandown Park, March 13, 1954

3. Moonlight III, Sandown Park, April 7, 1954
