Joseph Plant was born at Skegness on November 8, 1882 and became apprenticed to R. Sherwood at Newmarket.

During WW1 he went to live in Leamington Spa and became proprietor of the Cigarbox tobacconist shop situated near the Regent Hotel in the parade.

Joseph won the 1909 Cesarewitch on Submit, 1910 Lincoln on Cinderello, 1910 Victoria Cup on Senseless, 1908 Stewards' Cup on Elmstead and the Goodwood Stakes twice: Winwick in 1906 & Asticot in 1908.
