William Payne Sr.

1884 - 1961


William Henry Payne was born at Southminster, Essex, on November 23, 1884.

He was the son of a prosperous Essex farmer and was educated at Maldon Grammar School.

His first winner was Merry Royal at Chelmsford in 1904: he turned professional in 1903 and went on to be champion jockey in 1911 with 76 winners.

At Birmingham on January 10, 1911, having been unseated at the first open ditch by Golden Ray, he ran alongside his horse for several yards before vaulting back into the saddle with the agility of a circus rider. He then went on to win his race,

He rode four winners at Uttoxeter in May 1911.

Turning to training, he sent out the very first Champion Hurdle winner, Blaris.

William's brother, Richard (1883-1936) was also a successful jockey, likewise his son, William John.

William died at Chelmsford Hospital on December 8, 1961 aged 77. He left £67.
