Mark Ivor Price had 11 wins over jumps as an amateur before turning professional and adding another six.
His first success was at Newton Abbot on May 22, 1984, when Spaced Out finished strongly to overhaul Corrib Lad and take the Bulpin Challenge Cup, a hurdle race for amateur riders, by a neck. The runner-up was ridden by Richard Dunwoody, then at the start of what would be an illustrious career.
Mark struck up a useful partnership with Mrs Mercy Rimell, winning on four of her string, as well as enjoying two victories on handicap hurdler Star Of Ireland. He also finished second on Mount Oliver in the Kim Muir Challenge Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.
He made a pleasing start in the professional ranks, winning five races in the space of 28 days. However, the last of these was also the final victory of his career. At Hereford on April 4, 1988, the six-year-old Abbeydore narrowly held off the challenge of top amateur Marcus Armytage on Grogan to land the Ross-on-Wye Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) by a short head. Earlier in the afternoon he had finished second on Lady Crusty, but the winner of that race, Pooella, was subsequently disqualified on a technicality, belatedly giving Mark a double on the day.
