Neal Parker had only 22 rides during the 1993/94 jumps season but won on six of them.
Born on August 7, 1972, he was a conditional with former jump jockey turned successful trainer Philip Hobbs and had his first success for him at Exeter on September 8, 1993, when Distant Memory was driven out to land the Boddingtons Bitter Novices’ Claiming Hurdle by three lengths.
Neal had been on board for all three of the four-year-old’s previous starts that season, finishing second once and third twice. Next time out at the same course later that month they survived a stumble approaching the last flight to take the Dominion Oils Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Selling Hurdle by a neck from the fast finishing October Brew.
After coming third on both their next starts, they returned to winning ways at Ludlow on November 18, landing the Norton Novices’ Claiming Handicap Hurdle by three lengths.
Neal’s next win was at Chepstow for trainer Bob Buckler, whose See Enough was successful in the Grunwick ‘Championship’ Stakes N.H. Flat Race on December 4, beating Kenmore-Speed by three-quarters of a length.
Philip Hobbs supplied Neal’s fifth winner when Certain Angle, making his seasonal debut, had four lengths to spare at the end of the Amethyst N.H. Flat Race on the all-weather at Southwell on January 26, 1994.
Neal had his sixth, and final, victory at Wincanton on February 10, when Aal El Aal had a comfortable success in the Gillingham Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, beating the favourite, Jump Start, by eight lengths. Next time out they finished second at Taunton, after which the trainer’s brother, Peter Hobbs, took over in the saddle.
It does seem strange that Neal Parker’s race-riding career should have been over within such a short time, having notched half a dozen wins within six months, but he had no further success and seems to have disappeared from the racing scene almost as quickly as he had arrived.
