Born in 1878, Albert Harold Pickles held a Flat jockey’s licence for several years during the first decade of the 20th century but his only win was under National Hunt rules.
That sole success came on Easter Monday, April 8, 1901, when his mount, San Lucar, beat four rivals to claim the Wincanton Open Handicap Chase at that Somerset venue.
Unlike his jockey, the seven-year-old San Lucar was a prolific winner and had already scored twice that year. After the second of those victories he was bought by the good amateur rider Captain Wilfred Ricardo and had finished third twice carrying his colours when ridden by leading jockey Bill Dollery. However, with so many meetings taking place on that Easter Monday, Albert came in for the ride, his first over jumps, and made no mistake, winning “very easily” according to the form book result.
His next ride on San Lucar at Aldershot later that month did not go so well, ending in a fall. His owner then took over in the saddle for one more try before selling him.
Albert’s final ride was on Miss Doris, unplaced in the Maiden Hurdle at Maiden Erlegh on March 30, 1904. He had his last ride on the Flat in 1907. He trained briefly in the late 1920s.
