Clive George Price rode just one winner over jumps. He had started his career at Liverpool on December 5, 1963, when Teme Valley finished eighth of nine to get round in the Mistletoe Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2).
His moment of success came when Flights Orchid, trained by Dick Price at Clyro, near Hereford, and owned by his wife, won the Elkes Challenge Cup, a handicap hurdle, at Uttoxeter on April 18, 1964. The nine-year-old was winning his first race of the season at the ninth attempt, his runs having included the Spa Hurdle at Cheltenham’s National Hunt meeting, in which he had finished fifth under Jeff King, and the Liverpool Hurdle, where he was unplaced with Johnny Lehane aboard.
Clive had ridden him three times with one third place all they had to show, but now dropped into lesser company than that encountered at Cheltenham and Liverpool, Flights Orchid beat Ken White’s mount Sword Dance by three lengths.
Despite that Uttoxeter success, Clive did not keep the ride. He had his final mount when Pagan Prayer, also trained by Dick Price, was unplaced in the Wynnstay Handicap Hurdle at Bangor-on-Dee on April 3, 1965.
