Although much less successful over jumps than his son Billy, Alfred Parvin nonetheless rode 30 winners between 1899 and 1913.
His first victory was at Southwell on May 8, 1899, when winning a match race on Brecon for the Chesterfield Hurdle. His opponent, Nat Gould, beaten 12 lengths, was ridden by Arthur ‘Stosher’ Wood, one of the great amateur jockeys of the period.
Alfred had to wait almost three years for a second victory, but over the course of the next decade he continued to ride the occasional winner. He had a double at Retford Hunt in 1902 and another at Huntingdon ten years later. He had his only ride over the Liverpool fences when Melamar was a faller in the Stanley Chase on March 28, 1912.
He began 1913 by winning the first race of the year on the seven-year-old selling chaser King’s Cure at Manchester on New Year’s Day. They won again at Folkestone in April.
Alfred rode his last three winners in December of that year, the final two coming at Wolverhampton’s two-day Christmas meeting. Having been gifted a walkover on Featherstone on Boxing Day, he had his final victory the following day when Prince Conan won the Himley Handicap Hurdle by three lengths. His last ride was at Leicester on February 2, 1914, when Red Jacket was a faller in the Humberstone Maiden Selling Hurdle.
Albert Parvin died on April 24, 1943, aged 67. His son Billy Parvin rode 471 winners under National Hunt rules, was placed in the English, Scottish and Welsh Grand Nationals, and twice finished fourth in the jockeys’ championship.
