John Hamilton Palairet was born in Westhill, Ledbury Herefordshire on 23 January 1917, the son of Major Charles Andrew Hamilton Palairet.
Educated at Eton, he was a Major in the 3rd Carabiniers from 1937 to 1958 and rode two winners under National Hunt rules, both of which he owned himself and were trained by Alec Kilpatrick at Collingbourne Ducis. His racing colours were Eton blue, chocolate sleeves, quartered cap.
His first winner was Fourtowns in the three-runner Mordiford Chase at Hereford on 2 October 1948, beating Ted Vinall aboard the 6/1 on favourite Comique by three lengths. He rode Fourtowns several times that season and the next, including when finishing a tailed off last of three finishers in the Kim Muir Memorial Challenge Cup at Cheltenham on March 7, 1950. Later that month he rode Fourtowns in the Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown, trailing in last of seven to complete the course.
His second win came on Captain Gold in the Corinthian Handicap Chase at Kempton Park on 2 March 1951. Two weeks later, he rode Captain Gold in the Grand Military Gold Cup and was well-placed when falling with a mile left to run. He may have been injured in the fall, as he does not appear to have ridden in another race.
From 1961 onwards, he was a Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the Herefordshire Army Cadet Force.
He died at Southend-on-Sea on 27 November 1969, aged 52.
