Philip Plumb rode six winners over jumps in the mid-1980s. A conditional jockey, first with Mrs Mercy Rimell and then with Mrs Jenny Pitman, he had his first ride when Keithson finished unplaced in the Jim Slater Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Stratford on May 20, 1983.
Two years elapsed before his first victory, achieved when Irish Harvest, trained by Mrs Rimell, was a comfortable winner of the Great Hay Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1) at Ludlow on May 6, 1985, beating Glen Mayo by 12 lengths. They returned to Ludlow ten days later and followed up in the Aston Munslow Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1), this time by five lengths.
Philip had his first win over fences when Deep Ridge beat two rivals convincingly in the Haldon Hill Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase at Devon & Exeter on August 21, 1985. He had his first success for Mrs Pitman later that year when Lochrun came clear on the flat to take the Stanton Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase at Wolverhampton on December 27, scoring by six lengths.

He then rode Castle Warden to victory for trainer John Edwards in the Hamworth Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase at Kempton Park on January 17, and had a final success when Charter Hardware, trained by Mrs Pitman, beat 27 rivals in the Amateur Riders Association N.H. Flat Race at Cheltenham on April 17.
His last ride was in a similar contest when Smith’s Gamble was unplaced in the Grinwick N.H. Flat Race at Warwick on May 24, 1986.
