Jumps jockey Martin Nicholas Pepper was born on August 16, 1957, the son of a Hull trawlerman. He was apprenticed to Frank Carr and rode four winners on the Flat, the first being on Surprise D’Hermite in the Dunbar Apprentice Sakes at Edinburgh on July 23, 1973.
He had his first ride under National Hunt rules at Nottingham on March 29, 1974 when Penoben finished sixth in a Peter Marsh National Hunt Flat Race series. His first win came in another of those contests at Market Rasen on September 29, 1979, when Ring Tin Tin beat Murrayshall by two lengths.
He had to wait until Boxing Day 1980 for an initial win over obstacles, when Miss Wood battled on to beat Highmoor Lass by half a length in the Mordon Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1) at Sedgefield.
Martin enjoyed his most successful season in 1981/82 with 14 wins, and he twice had doubles at Market Rasen.
He rode a total of 54 winners under NH rules, the last of them on That There, trained by Pat Rohan, in the Nimrod Selling Hurdle at Worcester on August 15, 1988. He had his final ride later that season.
Martin wore contact lenses when riding. He once broke a collarbone four times in one season.
His younger brother Neil Pepper also rode over jumps.
