It is important for designers to organize and communicate how their design will be made. Planning how to make something will ensure you have all the correct materials and tools ready, meet deadlines, and avoid or reduce mistakes.
You plan should present the sequence for creating the solution. Each step should be presented in sequence.
When describing each step, you should include the following information:
A description of the step of the process
Resources such as materials, equipment, or people that are needed at each step.
Estimated time and Actual time
Description (1-2 sentences)
A short description of the step is sufficient. The description should be clear enough that another person would understand it. Use correct vocabulary to describe the step.
Resources
List the resources such as tools, equipment, machines, and materials that are needed for the step.
Time Estimate
Estimate how much time it should take to create the solution. This should help with your planning, and ensure you finish your project on schedule.
After completing the task, record how long it actually took. If the difference is significant, make a note of it.
Tables can clearly and easily organize information. They are good choices if the process is linear.
You can download a Google Slides template here to use in your inquiry.
Flowcharts can visually represent steps in a process. They are good choices if the process has many inputs.
Check out the section on Flowcharts for Designers in B4 for flowchart tools and examples
There are many flowchart apps available. The one that we recommend, Draw.io, is free, easy to use, and integrates very well with google apps.
Download from Google Chrome Web Store
Gantt Charts show how a process takes place over time, as well as the sequence. They are often used in project management.
You can create a Gantt Chart easily in Draw.io.
