Unicorns are rare, elusive equines with ossicones.
There are 3 species of unicorn. The largest and is the ashen unicorn, native to the central parts of the Ashen Savannah. The medium-sized unicorn is the meadow species, found in AAA. The smallest and most elusive species is the forest unicorn.
Unicorns are all equines, being somewhat related to horses, asses and zebras. Unlike their kin, they have large, pointed ossicones, colloquially called horns, on their foreheads. This ossicone is pointed and somewhat fragile. It is sturdy enough to be used in some intraspecific combats, as they fight for territory. Both males and females have ossicones. Their main use is to cast spells. Its alchemical proprieties are perfect for this purpose.
All the three species of unicorns are much more slender and gracile than horses. As such, they are slower and have less endurance, but they also feed less. Ashen and forest unicorns also have very long snouts. The first has is as a "mask" to filter ash and smoke, while the later simply has a stronger sense of smell.
Ashen unicorns are black with a few crimson stripes crossing their necks and snout. Their ears are large to disperse heat. They are the tallest unicorns, averaging 170 cm shoulder height for stallions and 160 for mares. Prairie unicorns have many morphs of varying shades of brown with red tints, occasionally a white coat. Males are usually 150 cm at the shoulder and females 140 cm. Forest unicorns are tiny, standing at 120 cm for stallions and 115 for mares. They have dark brown or black coats, with small white speckles. They also have white whiskers.
All unicorns are follivorous, eating grass and bushes. They are solitary and territorial, even amongst themselves. If unicorns of different sexes meet, it is common for them to fight. Young ones will be raised by their mother untill the age of 4, and only a single baby at a time. Twins are extremelly rare, happening only once for every 2000 births for forest unicorns, being even rarer for the larger species.
Their ossicones are able to be used as natural magical wands, and unicorns are capable of a few spells. Firstly, they can cast a disregard spell upon themselves as protection. They can also create light. Mares in heat will broadcast a odourless signal through their ossicones, which can be detected by males. The last spell known to be cast by wild unicorns is a laser, which can heat up a target. They also constantly emit pheromones that make other vertebrates sleepy, and this is often confused with spell casting.
Unicorns are hard to tame due to their anti-social nature. However, once a unicorn is tamed, it may learn a few special spells taught by the owner.
