Artist Statement

This piece was specifically inspired by the Shelton Art Company and that's where the idea of the checkerboard came in. However, the composition of the piece is very inspired by the first piece of this series featuring the now iconic pink flamingo, a red and orange-spotted snake and a green Italian ice cup. This piece has kind of mashed up the original composition by making it much flatter, as well as directing all 3 major elements with a checkerboard and negative space pattern.

I painted this piece also on cardboard  and it is easily the biggest painting I have ever created. I originally cut a pretty rough scrap of cardboard  off an amazon box and painted it in a thin layer of watered down light blue paint, thinking I would repaint the background and chop it down to size. However I really liked the gritty look and I decided to keep the patina look of the blue paint. I then color blocked in the animals and wanted to make my flamingo look more intimidating than it has looked in previous pieces by giving it a sad eye and a large beak. Finally I through a cover of gloss seal over the whole piece and called it good.
