"MOSQUITOES"
"MOSQUITOES"
This project was really pretty fun, one of my favorite projects we've done all year. I liked that we had about 95% of control over this project, and how we wanted to do this. I know the topic I chose isn't quite as widely disputed as topics fellow classmates chose, however I am pretty sure it is a point any human being with any political standing can agree on. I really, truly hate mosquitoes and I decided to get the word out there that mosquitoes really, truly suck, and the malaria virus kills around 1 million people every year. Even though the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing all it can, because mosquitoes are such small bugs and they can fly, so you can't exactly shoot them down with a bow and arrow. I didn't really draw this idea from anyone or anything and it kind of just came into my head, so there isn't really any inspiration for this piece.
I am quite proud of this painting because I feel like it is quite unique, if not in appearance than in concept. As I think I was the only person in the class to use acrylic. This also took me hours and looking back on it if I had just used markers than I could have been done in about an hour, however that isn't the feel that I was going for. Overall I actually really like how this came out, and I like how crisp all the lines are.
I created this piece on canvas, after learning my lesson making the abstract piece, I know now to use the right material for whatever medium I'm using. I guess this does represent me because I do strongly dislike mosquitoes, and the malaria virus has interested me ever since I was little. My dad used to tell me stories about his adventures in Africa and a lot of them are about preventing the malaria virus. I created this on canvas and the actual painting is about 10"x6". I used mostly acrylic paint but also used pencil to get the lines right and a black sharpie to sign it and get some of the tiny detail in the syringe. The mosquito is dripping blood because mosquitoes suck peoples blood, which is part of the whole "Mosquitoes Suck!" vibe I have going on. The little earth guy is the Word Health Organization and their efforts to eradicate the malaria virus, and the reason he has a syringe instead of an arrow is because you obviously couldn't fire an arrow at a mosquito however you could create a vaccine to stop malaria virus and consequently the mosquito carriers.
These are all my sketches and ideas for how the painting should look.
