Simplistic Style of Zhiyong Jing

Throughout the first block of my IS I want to paint in a style similar to English painter Liam Alvy, an artist I have been recently following on instagram and I'm quite in love with his style and works. He paints quite anthropomorphic subjects, often with bright colors which coincide with my own style. His subjects are often huge and take up the majority of the work with simplistic 2-3 colors backgrounds of mountains, trees, or the ocean. While I'm not entirely sure what medium he uses's I will obviously be using acrylic.
During week 1 I will outline and sketch my idea, and during week two I will actually start painting.

Throughout this next block I want to start to learn how to paint subjects more realistically, however not necessarily focusing solely human figures. The artwork during this block will be inspired by Zhiyong Jing, a Chinese painter who typically paints a vast background with small but extremely detailed subjects. I will create a composition of a larger background with small and detailed subjects, focusing on learning how to paint realistic details on my subjects.
During week 1 I will start sketching as well as make some small paintings of possible subjects and in week 2 I will paint the real composition.
I really had no solid plans for this week's piece, however I wanted to something around or involving cubism, specifically Picasso's cubist style.
In actuality I created a combination or fusion of an almost cubism-ish background with the classic flamingo being inspired by George Condo.

I was very excited to go into this piece painting something a little more realistic, however it really didn't end up very well. I did not prepare myself efficiently and I went in way over my head. I couldn't finish it in one sitting and after that I realized that this piece will probably never get finished. Because of that, I hit sort of a creative block for the next few weeks and I found it very hard to go back to the studio to create anything. This was one of the most frustrating episodes I have had in the past 2 years of creating art.
I noticed that I have almost no shadows in any of my paintings and after spending time exposed to lots of different works after visiting the museums for AP Art History, I wanted to experiment with shadows.
This piece was very fun and got me back into creating as it only took 2 or 3 hours and was a nice simple composition to put together.

This was the most ambitious piece I've probably ever painted and while it's not quite finished because I got super busy very suddenly, I'm excited to finish it at some point. It was inspired by Giotto's paintinings in the Arena Chapel with gold leaf and bold but streaky blue background. I wanted to paint more realisitcally than I had previous in the study and I'm not sure that really happened. However this painting has the most story as it will eventually depict the American border. I was frustruated with the gold leaf but will not give up on this piece.
I was driven to do this painting study as a way to force myself to paint more during a semester when I have no art classes. I'm embarrassed to admit that this is not going as productively as I envisioned, and even more embarrassed to admit that this was almost necessary for me to sit down in the studio this semester and paint some stuff. I picked a painting study on acrylic paint because it to date is my favorite medium and I wanted to paint more realistically. I have also previously felt like I have a very loud and bright style when painting with acrylic and I wanted to dampen those colors and style. While I'm not sure I succeeded at all on the latter, I was at least able to use that color palette to my advantage and create works that needed louder color schemes. This was most evident in my focus on the flamingo as the aspect tying my works together. The flamingo might have been my favorite part of the study, as I loved learning how to paint flamingos in different styles and settings. I struggled hard with meeting my time frame which I had initially planned on (a new work every two weeks), I just found myself extremely busy with small trivial things and pushed my art back to other times. Now being in the winter, I ski at least 5 times a week so it is very hard to find any time to paint, however, a plan for the second semester is to create more and set my expectations lower. I find myself ofter trying to create a complex composition and a deep meaning in my works, this scares me away from simple art and sometimes keeps me from just sitting down and painting. Overall I'm pleased with the diversity of my works this semester, but would like to try and get simpler and produce more in this coming semester.
I really wanted to paint in a quicker more expressive manner to continue to devolp my style as I feel like some of my paintings are almost clunky because I color block so much. For this piece I combined a more '50s themed, in my more traditional style, background, with a more expressive and realistic foreground.
I had fun creating this piece and using 2 completely different styles to make it, I also appreciated that it did not take forever to paint.

I was very inspired by Fernard Leger Jr's personal cubist style for this piece. As struggling to continue to put the flamingo into the art I wanted to break it down into simple shapes and see where I went with that.
This one was very fun and gratifying to make.

This is the biggest painting I have created to date but I was extremely pleased with how it turned out. It was a new take on the first piece I created for this series.

This piece was going to be created much quick in my head and I thought I could just throw some colors together in a simplistic style and call it good. It took much longer than anticipated but was a gratifying and unique process to how I normally paint. I also incorporated many specific elements of my mother's kitchen.
