"People holding up America"
Artist Statement for "People Holding up America"
I enjoyed working and sketching around the idea of a graphic for America or the USA. However I'm not too sure if I like how mine came out. I had big ideas in my sketches and I'm not really sure if I fulfilled them. For this project I worked on thick paper that was provided in the art bundles. I also used gel pens and black sharpie felt pen. I started off writing the words America and then finished it by drawing the wheels and people holding up the words. The reason I didn't add any detail to the people holding up America, is because those people represent the unknown people who hold up this country.
My favorite part of this assignment was how I had drawn Uncle Sam, however after going over the detail in his face with a pen I smudged it and had to go over his face in black to cover up the smudges. That really bummed me out but I feel like it adds a more anonymous vibe to him showing that Uncle Sam can be anyone. I also really like the little tiny people and wheels holding up and pushing the words America, and I was inspired by this by Dr. Seuss.
This represents me in that I am American and I am very proud to be so, but I also feel like it is the little unknown people who work at the bottom who really keep this country up, and I like how I portrayed Uncle Sam doing no work at all. Overall I am moderately pleased with how I did in this logo design, but I do wish I had gotten it closer to my sketches.
