Circle Project

"DISCO IN THE DESERT"

Sketches I created prior to starting the painting process

Artist Statement

This project was really fun to do. I was kind of challenging thinking of how I was going to incorporate circle into an artwork as the main idea or theme. I started of thinking that I was going to paint a small scene on a circle of cut out wood. I liked the idea but didn't love it also because it was going to be hard to cut and sand a good circle down from wood because I don't have any circular canvases. I decided to just cut a square of wood and than I put painting primer on it. I made a border with painters tape and created a small scene with a Moroccan style doorway and wall leading off into a small garden and some topiary and a palm tree.

I really like this piece and it is probably my favorite artwork I have ever created. My favorite part of it is the disco ball. The disco ball changes the North African vibe that I had created but I really like it and adds a level of weird and randomness in the artwork. My least favorite part is the garden behind the wall, I wanted this to look much more dry and desert-ey. But instead it turned out much greener than I wanted and I tried to redo it multiple times.

I created this piece after drawing both a thumbnail sketch and a more completed and final draft sketch, however the piece differs from both of them. I created it on a square of white pine wood and then put on white paint primer, and I created a border with painters tape. Than I sketched out my idea and painted it
