Self Portrait grid drawing

Artist Statement

This assignment was all about working on our shading skills. In the first assignment we went out into the halls and took a picture of our self. Then we printed the picture and drew a grid on both the picture and the paper. We were instructed to shape or "pull" our face out of the paper. We then took the picture and sort of transferred the picture to our paper using our newly obtained skills. After that we took the paper and erased the grid.

This assignments was all about unity. As they are entirely constructed by shades and scale. Shading was 100% of this piece. Another big aspect was shape. If the original shape of an aspect wasn't to scale than it would offset the whole drawing.

A big challenge was getting the scale and shade right. I redid my nose and eyes several times trying to get them to look normal. In the end I think it turned out pretty good. I am most proud of my hair in the drawing because I feel like that makes it appear more like me.
