Manly Seaside Kebabs from Memory, was the first sustained investigation of a series of 15 and I chose to "investigate" buildings from my childhood in Sydney that held meaning to me. Manly seaside kebabs was my family's aprés beach food of choice, although I never once remember getting kebabs there. We always got gyros and then would walk down the strip a little ways and get frozen yogurt.

To create this project I first sketched out the buildings onto the paper, then I used water color to go over that. I then created harder lines with micron pens. Finally for the lettering, the palm tree and the surfer I used gouache because it would sit better on the water color.

This project was fun to research because it was kind of a trip down memory lane. I painted the building with bright colors because it remains vivid in my memory, and it was only ever sunny when we went to the beach so this building was always nicely illuminated. The buildings next door to Manly Seaside Kebabs aren't the real stores that are next to it but I remember seeing surfers all around hence rip curl and we always would get froyo after our gyros hence the happy ice cream.
