Autumn Negative Space Drawing

Artist statement

The first step of this project was venturing outside to collect six different leaves. I collected five leaves as well as a rice krispies wrapper to add in a more modern feel. Once inside we all received a 9x12 piece of paper for our project. Next I used a ruler to create a one inch border, than I arranged the leaves inside the border. After arranging the leaves I traced them to accentuate the negative space. Finally I took 'fall themed' watercolors (red, orange and yellow) and painted lines in the negative space. I regret doing this however because this greatly takes away from the peice.

The elements of design incorporated into this piece would be lines as evident in the water color lines. Shape is in the leaves and rice krispies wrapper. There is obviously color as that is the prime aspect of the piece. Pattern is part of the rhythm in the water color designs.

The biggest challenge for me in this piece was figuring out what do to add into the negative space that was fall themed. I feel like I ultimately failed as it looks like a four year old created it. The thing that stands out as representing me in this piece is the rice krispies wrapper as I am very much a rice krispies enthusiast. I am most proud of the leaf shapes in this piece as they are very crisp and recognizable.
