I was struggling with inspirations for this piece as I kind of have all semester, as I'm learning I'm more of a two dimensional artist, however I'm very pleased with all of the 3d artwork I have so far created. Anyways I was struggling coming up with what my first Sustained investigation piece should be and how it could relate to fishing, and then we watched the bellringer in class about the lady who makes sculptures out of beach trash and inspiration struck. I decided to make saltwater decorative fishing lures out of beach trash. I wouldn't yet say that I'm an avid or even skilled fisherman, but I spent at least 4 days a week last summer with my friend bobby fishing for stripper, makeral, haddock, redfish, tuna etc. etc. so I have seen a fair amount of lures.
Most of the materials I used I found on a beach in front of our airbnb in Lubec, Maine. (We went up there for April break). It is quite a beautiful little lobstering town on the easternmost coast in the US, but with the lobsterman come fishing trash, such as broken lobster pots, lots of rope, nets, other fishing lures and all sorts of other things including cans, flip flops, parts of a tire etc. So the materials used for this project were not ordered like my last one and cost no money at all because I already had hooks glue and paint at home and collected the bulk of my materials from the beach. I decided to make 3 lures because I had drawn up 3 sketches and the lures are all quite different with different purposes. The largest is the top water popper lure, I widdled it down from an old lobster bouy with my swiss army knife. Then I cut out a circle from an old can to fit in the mouth, finally I added a hook and a place to attach a line, then I painted it accordingly.
I really had no clue what I was going to do on this project but I'm super pleased with how it came out, I really like the look, feel and build of the lures and even though I set out to create decorative lures they are more durable than I had initially thought and I would be confident to use them in real water and I want to try and catch a fish with at least the bucktail jig (red one with rope tail). A big challenge was figuring out how I would create them as I feel like I haven't yet worked enough with 3d structures, but I tried widdling down other bouys and realized it worked pretty well and then I just went to town making the big lure.
These are my sketches as well as the trash that I found on the beach, and what the lures are supposed to look like.
