Observational Drawing

Artist Statement

Austin Statue of Athena

graphite.

For this project we were instructed to create a visually realistic drawing of something without using a photo reference and rather using real life. I started drawing a still life in school, but wasn't able to finish that sketch so I used a statue from home as my model for the real project. I started by outlining the shape of the statue then started adding shading value. Finally I added some more confident, bold lines to increase the power and confidence in my image.

I used exclusivly graphite 2B, 4B and 6B poencils for this assaignment as well as tortillions for blending and smudging. Observational drawing is not a strong point of mine and something I would like to work on.

I honestly strongly discouraged this assaignment as it is not something I'm good at or enjoy doing, but I do realize the importance of it and will try and practice realistic drawing skills more. I'm somewhat pleased with how at least the shading turned out, but the drawing features themselves arn't great.
