Circle Grid

The Grid with a Junk Boat and a Bonsai Tree

Artist Statement

This project just came at a bad time, I have been super busy since this project was assigned and never had enough time to sit down and finish it, I didn't want to turn it in and have it look like I didn't try. So I waited until I had it where I wanted before I turned it in. I wanted to paint a bonsai tree and I thought that the grid of circles could pass as an interesting pot for the tree. I love bonsai trees, always have and thought this was a good excuse to paint one, it is not even the first I painted this year, the first being "Frog Jumping into poll under Chili Tree." I added a junk boat into the pot because I felt like it was missing something and I'm always striving to create more like Salvador Dali, and I thought that would make it more weird. The painting is 7 inches by 7 1/2 inches on canvas, I used acrylic and sharpie pen for minor details. All in all it took about 4 hours but it was super broken up and I never sat down to paint this for more than 45 minutes at a time. I think I created a few sketches for this piece but I kinda just painted and see what happened.

I am quite proud of this painting because I think it showcases my skill with acrylic, something that has greatly improved over this year. The wooden background of this piece was very intricate and painstaking, but I wanted it to look exactly how it looks, so it was worth it. Even though I think the piece came out well, I feel like its kind of boring, and I want to maybe change the bottom half of it and add some clouds and maybe some palm trees. Overall I'm pleased with how it came out but not sure I like it.

I really like bonsai trees and there has always been something special about them for me, so I wanted to paint a bonsai tree and make it look good. I was very carful to add the leaves in way that would look somewhat realistic and that was challenging. I feel like I achieved the challenge and so I'm pleased with that. Another challenge I had before even painting the piece was to incorporate the circle grid. This wasn't too challenging however I played around with the sizes of the circles quite a bit, and in reality I wish I had painted them even smaller, because the amount of canvas the pot takes up is too much and kind of bugs me. The junk boat was kind of a whimsical design and I was going for a very Japanese look. Even though the junk boat isn't Japanese, it works really well with the wave pattern which is Japanese. Overall I'm pleased with the turn out of this, but not sure that I like it because I feel like it is missing something. Also I'm not psyched about how long it took me to actually paint this piece.
