Scratchboard

For this piece I decided to do a picture of my tortoise Cocoa since it was recommended that we do a pet or a person. The image I used was one of the only ones i had of my pets on my camera roll that was clear. I thought that it would look cool when I finished it. I did mess up in some places but I just kept trucking on because once you scratch it off you can't take it back. I also got very frustrated at times because this project ended up taking me 24 hours to complete. This project relates to my life because even when life throws you a curveball, you have to be persistent and never give up.

To create this project I used a 9x8 inch section of a piece of scratch board paper for my actual piece. I also used a scratch pen, a printer, computer paper, a ruler, a pencil, and a pen.

For this piece, I started by picking an image of my pet tortoise and using the instructional video, I modified it until it was black and white with a full range of lights and darks (whites, blacks, and grays). I then printed the picture of Cocoa and gridded both the scratch board and the image with pencil and a ruler into 1 inch sections. I went over the scratch board lightly so that I wouldn't scratch off any of the black unintentionally. I then sketched an outline of Cocoas and each individual section lightly with a pencil for some guidelines before scratching. I then started working on it until it was finished which was very challenging at times because the image is so details and I was determined to match the image as best I could from the printed version. The things is the printed version could have turned out a little better which is why some of the sections are harder to make out than others. In the future if I were to do this project again I would to to reference the actual image on my laptop a little more to get a more realistic final product.
