For this assignment, we were tasked with making a piece or set that has something to do with duality. Duality is the quality or state of having two different or opposite parts or elements quality or state of having two different or opposite parts or elements. I decided to do salt and pepper shakers because salt and pepper are opposites that go together. I also wanted to do king and queen chess pieces because they are also opposites that go together.

For materials, I used clay, a scraper tool, brushes, water, and glazes.

For this project, I started with making a solid piece that was all one part but they realized that didn't work and made the different parts piece by piece. I looked at a picture of salt and pepper shakers as my inspiration for the shape of the different pieces and built it up from there. I then hallowed it out so that you could put salt and pepper in it. I originally made a different set of salt and pepper shakers which are labeled above as salt and pepper shaker prototypes. I learned that I need to create a lip at the bottom of the shaker so that I am able to put a stopper in it without it not being able to sit flat. I am glazing them white and black because traditionally chess pieces are black and white and so are diner salt and pepper shakers. If I were to do this again I would need to do it faster because it sort of hardened a bit and the salt shaker has a large hole in it. The piece came apart a little which I put back together but it came apart again afterward. I am hoping that I will be able to fix the hole with glaze so that it will still be functional.
