Art History Inspired

During this project, I chose to create a model of a giant pizza box. I was originally going to make a cannon out of cardboard but when I saw the box it looked like a huge pizza box so I decided to go with it. I was inspired by an artist and an art movement. My artist that I was inspired by was Jacques-Louis. He painted more historical paintings of events that happened during that time period that is why I added a British flag. He was my assigned artist and his work focuses on realistic paintings of people and war related events during that time period. The other topic that I was inspired by was Pop art. Pop art experimented with lots of bright colors and even some sculptures of things that were enlarged. That's where I got the idea to do a sculpture from. This project relates to my life because things might not always work out how I originally thought but I have to learn to trust in the process and make the best out of things which is what I tried to d with this pizza box.

To create this piece, I used a variety of different materials. I used a 32”x 40” cardboard box for the actual box itself. I also used Gesso paint to paint on the cardboard. I used a ruler to draw my guidelines and outlines for things I included on the box, acrylic paint, and paint pens to make the pattern and designs on top of the box. I also used paint brushes to apply the paint.

I experimented with process by first painting the entire box white to get a base for the rest of the stuff I was going to paint on top of it. Then I used a ruler to measure the box, chose the smaller side (32”) and drew out a 32” x 32” box leaving a 4-inch border on 2 of the sides since the length (40”) was 8 inches longer than the width (32”). I then gridded out 4” x 4” squares within the 32” x 32” square. This was so that I could create some sorts of checkered pattern. I then took a chair and placed it in the center of the box. I traced it so that I could add something Neoclassicism related in the center of it to mix Neoclassicism with Pop Art. After that, I erased the lines in the center of the circle. I then painted every other square red to have a red and white checkered pattern and painted a British flag in the circle. I tried to also add Neoclassicism related doodles with paint pens. If I were to do this project again, I would try to add more doodles and details to the box, add more coats of paint, and try and smooth things out more.
