Eccentric Teapot Design

For this assignment, we needed to make a teapot that was inspired by different components of whatever we chose. I decided to make my teapot inspired by Alice and Wonderland as described in the slideshow above. I used components from different characters to make up the different parts of the teapot.

Materials used include a bucket to trace to make the clock round, underglaze, a metal pokey tool, and the slab roller.

Most of the underglaze colors I had to custom mix include gold (yellow, blue, red), pink (white and red), purple (purple and white). I used the bucket to get the round shape of the clock so that it wouldn't be deformed and used that as the base. I let it dry out a little so that it wouldn't cave in when I added the other pieces to it. I tried to make a bottle spout and had some difficulty with the first one I made because it was too small and not the right shape. I then got help from Mr. A and we re-examined the shape of the "drink me" bottle in the reference image and came up with a new design that we executed/problem solved to have a better outcome. I also decided to match the colors to the ones in the reference pictures as best as I could. If I were to do this assignment again, I would try and find a different way to make the bottom of the teapot because it ended up popping off even though I slip and scored it. Maybe I should add more slip next time to make sure it combines. To problem solve we are going to try and use the glaze to attach it when it gets fired in the kiln.
